I read the biography of Weldon Kees and I saw a connection
to his sonnet “For My Daughter”. In July
1955 Kees’ car was found deserted near a bridge and he was never seen or found
again. It was mentioned that he talked about starting a new life somewhere
else. The sonnet was written in 1940 during WWII “Death in certain war” (9). My
interpretation of the sonnet tells me that the speaker/narrator looks at the
U.S in that time, and thinks of how rough it is. He no longer agrees with
living here and wouldn't like to bring a child into such a place “I have no
daughter. I desire none” (14).
