I reviewed the story and now know that Binh is a man. I did believe that he was a woman because of his lust for boys. That was jumping to a conclusion on my part. Binh views himself as a "sideshow freak" because he does not look or talk the same as French people. His facial features are different because he is from Asia and has a different accent, and has difficulty pronouncing the French language. This causes his to feel like he does not belong and he feels very different from other people.
