I believe her mother was very young and immature when she had Emily. Emily had a very difficult childhood. Her father left them and her mother did not really pay attention to her. I don't believe that her mother was a bad person i just think she did not know how to be a mother for Emily. It is unfortunate that Emily had to suffer , because of her mother immaturity.
Interesting- how do we know Emily's mother was immature at the time of her first pregnancy? Also, since you mention that the mother is not a bad mother, it sounds like you are responding to someone else's comment? If not, why would Emily's mother be considered a bad mother?
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is difficult to define what a "bad mother" is. The mother was young, and probably not at the age where she had the knowledge and experience to raise a child. But from the time period it seems that she's in, there most likely wasn't any form of abortion or major birth control. I believe being a single mother is one of the hardest things a female can do. I think that Emily's mother was letting her weaknesses define her relationship with her daughter and what she can do for her. I wouldn't consider her a bad mother because she did love her child, and she did try to make her happy even if that meant leaving her with others. I think Emily's mother was battling with her maternal instincts more than anything.
ReplyDeleteExcellent point about birth control. And I agree, that the definition of a 'bad mother' is not easily formulated. I'm interested to hear a bit more about the mother "letting her weaknesses define her relationship..."- what do you think her weaknesses are? Is this related to the mother battling with her maternal instincts?
ReplyDeletei dont believe her mother was a bad mother. i think life circumstances, hardships and lack of experiece didnt allow her to be a better mother. it was very unfortunate and sad for Emily who was the one had to endure it. i think when she was ill she couldve tried harder.
