Kristel Encarnacion's response to "live-in cook"
One of the things that i noticed in this short story, is that the Binh is a man that has to endure a lot of things in France. Much of all that stemming from him being a Vietnamese immigrant who is not fluent in french, not rich and is also gay. In France Binh sort of loses any sense of identity he might of had back home because in France who he is ,is reflected on his skin and the way he looks. Throughout the story i get the sense that Binh wishes he were back home where ultimately he was just another man.

Good observation, Kristel. Do you think his job as a live-in cook further contributes to him feeling as if he "[lost his] sense of identity"? Why did Binh come to Paris?
ReplyDeleteBinh set out to paris after he was cast out by his father. I defenitly feel that being a live in cook has contributed to Binh feeling as if he has lost any sense of identity. Binh is just a man who cooks and receives no recognition. He has to follow to the t his employers directions on salt and how much is to be used, even being told that they will decide when salt is needed. Furthermore i don't get the sense that Binh is as fulfilled and happy in that house and Paris as he would like to be.
