Live in Cook Sukari M Lopez

When i was reading the short story live in cook, many things came to me in my mind like for instance how alone bihh feels in Paris even though one might argue that he's been in Paris for long enough to pick up on how their society works. No one will ever know how it feels to be a immigrant in a new society being judge by a whole bunch of people who were born into those lifestyle. In the story he is or she the charter is depicted to seem and feel like an outsider of some kind, Like he is not accepted. I also believe that he is very sure of the things that he wants when he is drunk and is able to forget how he is living. I wanna hear what everyone has to say about the story looking forward to class.

  1. I also see how hard it is to be gay in any society, especially when one is comfortable in there own skin

  2. I totally agree with you when you mention the word immigrant. Many people in France as here in New York are immigrant and they have to go through a lot of things for example; the language which is important so that you can communicate to get a job. It is indispensable to survive in a country which is not yours.

  3. Sukari-yes the issue of immigration is central to "Live-in Cook", but how does the fact that Binh is an immigrant in Paris lend itself to him working as a cook? Also, remember that the two women who hire him are not French, so they are immigrants as well. Also, what do you mean by "I also believe that he is very sure of the things that he wants when he is drunk"
Diana- your comment about the similarity of the immigrant experience is well noted, but there are many immigrants in New York, as well as all over the world, who do not speak the country's language. How do they survive? This is what Binh cannot find in neither Paris nor Bilignin.

  4. Yes Miss B, i know that some people might not survive and not even have a long term job because of the language. What i have seen lately is that people who do not speak the language memorize the most common words so that they can at least defend themselves, some with a poor salary, others making an effort to understand the language so that they can get a better payment.
