3 poems

Each poem with the exception of For My Daughter were essentially stories of hope in dark yet realistic situations. The ominous over tones of For My Daughter I believe only dealt in the dark and negative side of reality. The person whose thoughts we are reading in this poem seems to have given up hope in a bad situation where as the people in the other two poems found specific motivation to carry on.

  1. Can you provide an example of hope in "The Chimney Sweeper"? What is it that will set the children free from the perilous and hard labor? "For My Daughter" deals with "dark and negative side of reality" ...whose reality? Who is the speaker? What is the 'bad situation'? How does the speaker in "Mother to Son" convey hope and how does the extended metaphor in this poem facilitate this? or not?

  2. After reading the three poems, i had felt the same way Jordan. The first two had me so en-lighted and as i started reading the last one "For My Daughter" i felt like my enlightenment dropped on the floor. It doesn't have a sort of hopefulness that the others portrayed. In the others there was always a chance or a way out of things to move on in life but the third one seemed as if the father only suggested misery for her daughters life. I believe the person speaking was probably psychologically accustomed to believing that life was something to hate instead of love.
