Analysis of Poems, Shaquesha Smith

"To His Coy Mistress" By Andrew Marvell
This poem is about a man who wants relations with a woman. Throughout the poem he is trying to convince her to have sex with him. He tells her how much he adores her and her body. He tells her he will continue to love her if she agrees to have sex with him. He doesn't want anyone to bother them and their love. He wants to live freely with her and he can't wait for her to agree to have sex with him.
"My Life had Stood - a Loaded Gun" By Emily Dickinson
This poem was about a woman who sees herself as a loaded gun. As a gun she hunts in the woods with the owner of the gun. As a gun she will protect him when he sleeps. It is her duty. She believes he will live longer because of this.

The both poems are written in first person. The woman in the first poem is compared to a ruby and the woman in the second poem is compared to a gun. Why would a woman be compared to a gun? The only reason I can think of is a lot of men who own or use guns name them after women or call them feminine names like baby, her etc.

  1. Can you identify the line in Marvell's poem where the speaker says he will love the mistress after she has sex with him?
I really like your question about the gun as a metaphor for a woman. In response to your questions- I think we should think about the idea of a loaded gun and how it relates to a woman? A gun is used by its owner, in this poem also referred to as master. What might the speaker be revealing about the relationship between between her and the man?
