Is Female to Male as Male is to Culture

One line that stood out to me, mainly because I finished my first draft earlier today, was the line weher Sherry Ortner said, "There is something something genetically inherent in males that make them the dominant sex; that "something" thats missing in females, and as a result, women are not naturally subordinate, but, in general  quite satisfied with their position since it affords them protection and the opportunity to maximize their maternal pleasures that to them are the most fulfilling parts of life (9)." I wonder what that "something" is. This dynamic is completely reversed in some of the readings, mostly "Night Thoughts". The husband in that story lacked that special "something" be it competitiveness or confidence.

  1. Yes, the short stories we read seem to complicate the binaries of male/female, culture/nature. But is Ortner the author of this quote, or is she expressing a commonly held belief?
