Is female to male as nature is to culture
Reading this just reassures my thoughts that us women somehow will always be inferior to men . This reading explains that the issues roots come from culture. Culture surrounds our society, its what make many of us different, however many if not all of these cultures always have women in a lesser value then men. We do not have the same power as the men figure in our society do" Their are many cultural ideologys devaluing women" (4). Something that also catches my attention is when they say that many women are comfortable with their position in society(5). In other words we find comfort in allowing men to dominate and take the role of leaders. This bafflels me because it shows that their are some of us who find comfort in this situation, instead of seeking ways to make a change for more equality. It does please me to say although culture has allot to do with our down fall in being inferior to men we are slowly rising in having more right and learning how to voice our opinion.

I had to read this piece two times before I came to the exact same thought like you Erica, about how "woman are comfortable with their position in society." This really bothered me, knowing that there are many woman out there who feel comfortable being dominated by men. Woman spent all those years and put so much time into fighting for equal rights as men but yet some are still letting men "control" them. But you are also right when you state that "we are slowly rising in having more rights and learning how to voice our opinion." Woman are still fighting to be viewed equal to men and each generation will prove that.... hopefully.
ReplyDeleteErica- what are some of the "cultural ideologies", Ortner cites, which devalue women (4).
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree that women have been and continue to challenge their secondary, subordinate position, but, as you and Samantha, note in many ways, Ortner sees women as willing participants in their own oppression. How does Ortner explain this? Can you think of an example from one of the short stories we read that illustrates this point?
your right i believe that society is scared of changed. As humans we tend to go by the saying if its not broken it doesn't need to be fixed. However we need to understand that change is OK. It may be different ,but society will value us more , not only as women but as individuals.
