"My Thoughts" Is Females toMales as Nature Is to Culture
This article gave me a further understanding of how we as people use words to shape our thoughts and ultimately hape our society. Meaning anyone with intellect can persuade a person who is ignorant anything as long as it sounds and appears to be right. When the B. Ortner talks about nature and culture, and how males and females relate to them, my mind tells me she could have switched roles around and made the same argument. Similar to when people mention God we immediately thido it state, "And god said let us make man in the image of ourselves and likeness...." nk of good, but when they mention the devil we think of bad. There is definitely a connection between humans and nature. For example majority of Earth is filled with fluid, just like majority of our body is.
To me, we as men and women are not all equal but we are all needed in this world to serve a certain purpose. Even in reproduction we need each other. We can not have one with out the other. . I ask many christians why in the bible, "book of Genenisis" I ask them who was the "us" God was talkn about. Immediately they defend it by using their interpretation of the bible just like Ortner gave us her interpretation of her thoughts, "Is Females to Male as Nature Is to Culture.
This is an interesting response but just to clarify- thought Ortner does not cite examples from religion to support her argument- are you saying that society just like religion are institutions which use power and influence to convince their members to follow rules without questioning them? Or are you saying Ortner is manipulating the reader? Can you explain how equating man with nature and woman with culture -the opposite of what Ortner does-would be just as effective/convincing?
