The short story “Sweat” begins with the introduction
of the protagonist Delia who is known to be a washerwoman who starts to work
late to get a head start. Delia is a contemplative woman who seeks for her
husband Sykes because he has her working tools. Sykes is introduced in the
story when he tries to scare Delia by using a horse whip to be used as unrealistic
snake to scare her. For the past fifteen years she was troubled by
her husband Sykes who keeps mistreating her and feels no pity. As we read on in
the story Sykes is angry with Delia because she washes “white people clothes”.
Apparently this shows a sign that Sykes was a racist. He was a careless person
and had no respect for Delia. An example would be when he kicks a nice pile of
clothes that she have folded because they were the clothes that he had
disliked. This showed that Sykes was
abusive towards her.
Further in the story, we soon discover that Sykes
has an affair with a woman named Bertha while Delia tries to maintain a living by
working very hard and going to church. Another disgraceful part in the story is
when Sykes goes out with Bertha and spends Delia’s own money that she worked
very hard for on her. This shows that he has a lack of pity on her and that he
lives with guilt. I see Delia to be as a type of woman with outstanding
patience. She is very responsible and takes care of the little house. She is
indeed related as a feminine character in the story but also she has a the
bravery and patience of a masculine character.
What is "Sweat" analogous to? I don't believe Sykes is angry with Delia for wearing "white people's clothes." Please look back to the story. Also, I think it is a big leap to make the claim that Sykes is a racist based on this one statement?
