Sweat -Noelia Lara
After reading "Sweat", i had grown a sympathy over the main character which was Delia. My only comment and question towards this reading was, why after 15 years of marriage, and of working as hard as Delia to be able to sustain her and her husband, did Delia accept abuse verbally and physically from her husband the way she did? She was a powerful, hardworking women on her own could of gone far without being by his side. The only answer i could of truly believed was that she had lost hope of finding love again. She is starting to finally defend herself maybe because shes tired of his insults but still why does she continue with him, knowing that he'll never change. Its just like Clarke said "Tain't no law on earth dat kin make a man be decent if it ain't in 'im." This is is true. Skye will not change if he didn't have the intention to in 15 years he wont ever. So i ask myself why stay with someone to only torment your life more. I understand shes afraid of not finding love and maybe of being alone, and maybe even she's accustom to him now but personally i would prefer be alone than abused for over 15 years. Delia deserve to be happy she works so hard and seems to be a loving person. It up to her to find a new life if she really wanted to. But perhaps psychologically shes no longer capable of running from his hands.

The points you raise in regards to why Delia stays with Sykes (fear, habit, psychological dependence, etc.) are all valid. But why doesn't Sykes leave if he - as he says- hates her and the fact that she is skinny (Hurston 428, 424)? Other than the factors which you mentioned, why else does Delia insist on staying? Is it because she doesn't want to leave Sykes or ...what else does she feel attached to?
