Poor Delia went thru so much with Sykes. Sweat was a symbol of hard work, dedication, pain, and even love. Delia suffered for 15 years with this guy! He was very cruel to her, but she remain strong. I see that somehow the snake meant panic, anxiety, pain, and terrifying. I felt really bad for Delia and somehow I felt identified with Delia because I know how does it feel to be treated that way by a man.
Yes, I agree that sweat is a symbol in this story, and I like the different permutations of meaning you attribute to this symbol. When you write that the "snake meant panic, anxiety, pain and [terror]", do you mean that the snake is a symbol for all these feelings/emotions? If so, how do we read this symbol in regards to Delia, who ultimately comes not to fear the snake?
