"Sweat" Response- Karolina Rak
This was yet another story about roles between women and men and who is stronger and has more say. In this story, Delia, the wife, is abused and mistreated by her husband, Skyes. He really puts her down on any occasion that he possibly can. to him, the fact that he cheats on her isn't bad enough, he has to physically express his almost as if hatred towards her. For all the bad that he has done, I think is serves him right that the snake attacks him at the end, meanwhile he brought that snake in to torture Delia.

Your post, for the most part, recounts the plot of the story. But maybe we should pause over your first sentence and the two ideas you express there. What does the story reveal about "roles between women and men" ? How is strength related to gender and who, in this story, appears stronger?
ReplyDeleteIn this story, obviously the man is stronger than the women. He expects her to do everything for him regardless of how he treats her. In his mind, he believes that everything he is doing, is completely fine. He does not care that he is hurting her mentally, physically and emotionally.
ReplyDeleteBut if Sykes is stronger than Delia, why does he bring a snake home to terrorize her? Also, aside from his bullying and the narrator describing him as a "strapping hulk" (Hurston 423), Sykes appears lazy(he doesn't work) and he beats up on his wife, who his worn from work and abuse. How much strength does that take?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Karolina it has a lot to do with the time they were in. Back then women weren't respected and to do hard labor. Cooking and cleanimg wasn't enough. When Delia stood up to him he made it seem as if he did more for the house then she did. And that snake attacking him was karma in my opinion.
